Celebrating Impact: Building a Legacy
Shawnee State has long been a hub for cultivating talent in game development. This past Friday was a powerful reminder of what truly drives that success.
The day unfolded through a series of gatherings that drew students, faculty, alumni, and guests into shared spaces across campus. Each moment contributed to something larger than individual events. At its core, the focus remained on people: those who invest in others, raise expectations, and help shape the community over time.
Recognizing Impact

That shared focus on people carried forward into one of the most anticipated moments of the day, the recognition of impact within the SSU Games community.
We honored Marcus Cenci with the SSU Games Impact Award, and in doing so, we were not just celebrating a moment. We were recognizing years of consistent contribution to our game development community.
Marcus has spent over 20 years in the games industry as an Art Director and Lead Artist, contributing to major franchises including Saints Row and Madden NFL. For nearly half of that time, he has also been actively involved with SSU Games, mentoring students, visiting classes, and supporting the program in ways that directly connect students to the realities of the industry. He is currently building his own studio, Mumble Mouth Games, continuing a career defined by both industry leadership and community impact.
More importantly, he elevates expectations. His presence challenges students and faculty alike to push further and produce work that reflects the level of the industry they are entering.
That kind of influence shapes more than projects. It shapes people.
Creating a Space for Legacy

Across the Legacy & Culture Arcade, the SSU Games Impact Awards are showcased, with Marcus Cenci’s award joining those of José Araiza and Samuel Bushman, reflecting a shared legacy of impact within the SSU Games community and the continued connection between industry professionals, alumni, and the program itself.

The arcade centers on play and engagement through retro console setups that highlight the history and evolution of game design across generations of hardware. It also features student-built arcade cabinets that showcase their own games. Alongside these are custom handheld systems, including MAGFest SWADGEs contributed by an alumnus who helped develop games for the platform, offering a look at experimental handheld hardware used for creative game development. Together, these pieces preserve history while showing students what they can achieve.

Closer look at the legacy items.
Layered throughout the space is a curated collection of awards and memorabilia, documenting the broader impact of the program. These artifacts include alumni game box art from shipped titles, a motion capture suit connected to early VR experimentation involving SSU Games graduates, a jersey designed by Marcus Cenci, and other items that reflect industry careers shaped through the program.
Together, these pieces preserve history while showing students what they can achieve. They bring play, recognition, and legacy into a shared environment that continues to grow, with new work and artifacts regularly added and curated as the SSU Games legacy evolves.
Continuing to Inspire

This event reinforced something we have always believed. Building games is only part of what we do. Building community is what gives it meaning.
At Shawnee State, we will continue to celebrate those who make an impact and create an environment where that work inspires others and carries forward into the industry.
Because legacy is not just something we look back on. It is something we build together.
